Belgrade (Beograd) is the capital of Serbia, and has a population of around 1.6 million. It is the biggest city in ex Yugoslavia and it is situated in South-Eastern Europe, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe and, beside Athens, the greatest urban whole of the Balkan. With its bridges Belgrade is not just Balkans, but it steps forward to Central Europe and becomes the city which collects the experience of different cultures.
Belgrade is a pavilion of art. There are various festivals in which are most of the Serbian film industry and many theatres. IT has a reputation for offering a vibrant nightlife; many clubs that are open until dawn can be found throughout the city. The most recognizable nightlife features of Belgrade are the barges (splav), spread along the banks of the Sava and Danube Rivers.
Architecture of Belgrade refers to the architecture and styles developed in Belgrade, Belgrade has wildly varying architecture, from the centre of Zemun, typical of a Central European town, to the more modern architecture and spacious layout of New Belgrade. The oldest buildings date only from 19th century. During the period of Communist rule, much housing was built quickly and cheaply to house the huge influx of people from the countryside following World War II, sometimes resulting in the brutalist architecture of the blokovi (blocks) of New Belgrade.
Belgrade as a grid of allies, dark streets and vaults, cobbled and macadam streets, fences and huts – antiquities sometimes not respected enough. They are all over the place, but unnoticed for many, among buildings and skyscrapers, boulevards and parks… They remind of what Belgrade used to be, besides fortress, also a small and backwater town…
All citizens of Belgrade love to talk of the spirit of the city. Open and ever ready for fun, many Belgraders will claim to be true hedonists – and many of them really are - knowing all there is to know about good food, wine and music.
The citizens of Belgrade like all sorts of things: pleasant conversations and long walks, drinking their morning coffee or days off work. They like being in motion and therefore the streets, walkways, cafes and restaurants are always filled with people. More importantly, Belgraders like everyone.
